Getting the fiends to eat their vitamins

I just gave the budgies a big plate of vegetables and egg and they are currently tucking in and flinging it everywhere with glee.

The vegetable mess contains the following:

The Bird Pellets and Pine Nuts are sprinkled into the mix just to make sure that any fussy birdies still get their vits!)

Sweetcorn niblets (rich in vitamin B)
Broccoli grated (rich in vitamins B, C and K)
Carrot grated (A, K)
Egg chopped (A,D,E,K)
Chopped Pine Nuts (B,E,K)
Crushed Harrisons Superfine Bird pellets (All manner of healthy things)

Look what arrived in the post today, a lovely little painting of my Monty.  A friend on the Buderigars.co.uk forum said that she was going to send me a surprise and made me wait ages with no clues (mean or what!)

But it was worth waiting for as this morning when I got back from doing some food shopping (also Corn and some Parsley for the budgies - they eat better than I do) a small package that was teasingly double wrapped was on the mat.

Thank you Gaile, I really love it!

Sunday 22 May 2011

As part of my budgie cleaning regime implemented since January I wash up all of the budgie stuff every evening - seed pots, toys, playgrounds, Soap dishes, anything that they have played with that day.

Things get covered with dust, poo, food and who knows what else, my budgies don't have the best table manners!

I read somewhere that budgies have the mentality of a 3 year old child - so that is nine 3 year olds chucking stuff about, playing and squabbling all day!

I choose to wash it all in the evening so that it's all dry and ready for feeding and play time early the next morning.

As you can see from last nights pile, they do create a lot of work for me, but they are worth it!

The birds had an afternoon nap in Budgingham Palace this afternoon all together with no bickering.  It was very quiet.

They're not quiet at the moment they're all whistling along to the radio having feasted on Basil, Trill and various seed sticks.  Not to mention bashing mirrors and general larking about.

It's a tough life being a budgie..

Told you I could get to the top first Blueboy!

Nine for a nap?

Did you have to take a photo when I had my beak full?

I am standing up as straight as I can, take the photo!

Some of the Green Stuff

I can't seem to wean the budgies off of Basil, I keep trying new herbs but they either hate them or just feel apathetic towards them.

Even the old favourite Coriander seems to be more miss than hit these days.

Maybe Basil has some magical property for budgies that I am yet to fathom out.

Anyway they still love it and always rush over when I put it out - in fact Monty and Lilek are usually on it nibbling before I can put it down for them.

They hate mint, it's a shame because I'd quite like the house to smell of mint for a change, Dill makes it smell buttery and Basil makes me want a salad but maybe the mint will bring the desire for Polos.

Photos as always!

Monty keeps an eye on Snowy and Roswell

Today Monty wanted to make sure his bird (Snowy) wasn't getting too flirty with Roswell, so he kept a close eye on them both.

Roswell got quite excited and started trying to put his foot on Snowy.

It's funny to think that when we brought them both home in January 2010 they weren't that keen on each other even though they are from the same place.

These days they like to muck around and play together.

Pic 2 - "I am just not that kind of bird" says Snowy to Roswell

Treats for the Terrors

How about this for a bargain - in our local pet shop we can get seven big sprays of millet for a quid. So this weekend we made a special trip via the Island Hoppa (Which is a free bus service) to the market and also ended up buying some 700g bags of budgie seed and budgie tonic seed, two ping pong balls - one orange and one yellow plus a couple of fruit treat sticks.

These treats will last them a while as I only give them a millet day once a week and the rest of time time it is used as a reward for good behaviour. They are not that well behaved!

These budgies are so spoilt..

Of course we had to reward ourselves with a Chelsea bun each too. Well why not!

Today is a lovely sunny day and the fiends are listening to some Spandau Ballet on the radio (Heart fm) while preening themselves and making lots of mess.

We got the fiends a couple of new balls, some millet and some treat sticks yesterday.

We found that the budgies seem to like Yellow and Orange toys the best so hopefully they'll love the balls we got them, they are meant to be cat balls and have little paw prints on them and a tinkly thing inside.

We like to put them in their budgie soap dishes to play with.  Snowy really loves to sing to them.

Not sure that Custard appreciated me taking a quick snap of her while she was trying to snooze.  It was so cute that I had to though.

Meanwhile little Dumpling put on his bestest smart budgie face and told me a lot of stuff about nuclear physics that I didn't know before.  He wouldn't let on but I think he had been to the Library - or Idea Store as they are called here in Tower Hamlets!

Roswell obviously sneaked out to Toni and Guy to get his little quiff trimmed and gelled especially for these photos.  He must have heard hubby and I talking about getting some new batteries for the camera.

Friday 6 May 2011

Today like every day I had to chase Dumpling and Sky out of the kitchen several hundred times, it's a dace we like to have.  They waddle in making as much racket as they can muster, knowing full well I will run in and chase them out again shouting "get out naughty boys, I have told you not to go into the kitchen"

I could close the door, and I sometimes do, but the thing is it blocks the air flow into the front room.  Also I need to maintain my physique somehow and budgie chasing is as close to sport as I get these days,

Get aaaahhhhht of the kitchen you horrors!

Sky and Dumpling waddle into the Kitchen

The birds had some Thyme today which they mostly ignored, caught Sky nibbling on it for a few seconds.  Made the house smell lovely though.

Where is Custard, can you spot her?

Where is Custard?

There she is, pigging on and standing on a Trill Topper.  Roswell is peering in.

Thursday 5 May 2011

I have told you a thousand times, I, Monty, King of the budgies rule this house and everything and person in it.  You are a wheelybird and have no rights or power here.

I am the boss!

Wednesday 4 May 2011

If I can pull this piece of millet off the side of the cage then I can hide it for later

For the budgies the day was just a blur

"Roswell I can see your vent, come down at once" says Jerry

Monty sometimes got flashbacks from 'Nam when he saw too much greenery

"Jerry and I weren't getting up to anything, honest" pleaded Roswell

What do you want Marlow? - leave us be to eat our food.

Monday 2 May 2011

Turn that radio down, I am trying to get some kip!

Last night at about 2am We heard pinging coming from the front room. I got up and rushed to find out what was going on. Blueboy decided to wake us to let us know that we had left the radio on too loud for his liking. I always leave LBC97.3 on quite low for the budgies so that they have a low constant noise and don't get scared if something loud happens outside.
It was obviously a tad too high for little Blueboy and had disturbed his slumber.
I came in, lifted the cover of his cage to see Hector and himself peering down at me.
The conversation went something like this:

Me: "Are you okay. Is the radio too loud?"
A little run up the perch and "Ping Ping Ping" came the reply.
Me: "I'm sorry, I'll go and turn it down for you" (went to turn it down)
Me: "Is that better?"
Blueboy "Ping Ping Ping"
Me: "Good, go to sleep now, bedtime for budgies"
Blueboy: "Ping Ping Ping"

Then I didn't hear anymore pings til 7.30am after my alarm went off.

Roswell Rocks out with some Basil!

Tasty Millet treat

Monty Likes to throw balls

Monty has been enjoying throwing a purple bell-ball off of the top of the cage onto the floor.  He will then look over the edge to see where it landed :)

Do your budgies throw things?
