Fun frolics and drinking your meds

Blueboy likes me to know that he's drinking his calcivet. He shouts at me til I watch him then has a nip of water and flies off squawking!

Lilek is getting cheekier than ever. I put the budgies seed to one side while I had some egg out for them and Lilek found the seed and tucked in!

Here is a photo of the budgies relaxing in the evening for your enjoyment, aren't they colourful :)

And another of the cheeky Lilek..

Din Dins for the Fiends

The fiends are currently dining on a lovely nutritious meal of Sweetcorn niblets, Broccoli and Carrot enriched with sprinklings of Harrison's bird pellets, Avian seaweed and a tiny sprinkle of Guardian Angel.

I expect to find tiny sweetcorn husks all over the lino in about oooh five minutes!

Gotta love 'em, but they certainly do keep me busy.

Boisterous fiends splashing about and a dumpling being naughty as usual

The birds had a little bath-ikins yesterday which they seemed to enjoy tremendously - especially Monty. We have a little shallow saucer which my husband thought might make a good "bird bath" so I put a little tepid water in and Monty came bounding over and jumped in it - look at the picture below you can see that he was very enthusiastic about it!

I don't know if I have mentioned this before, I have a confession to make - I call Lilek "Dumpling" - it's his slightly rounded shape and the way he waddles along - of course I mean it affectionately and cutely. He also dives at our plates of food whenever he gets the chance.

Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner are spent fending him off of toast and pasta - he actually landed on my sandwich yesterday and the day before got some ketchup on his tail from waddling through my husbands food.

I know that he just wants to eat with us as he sees us as part of the flock which is fair enough, so yesterday I sliced up some apple and fed him some from my plate (not the same bits as I was eating obviously) as we watched TV and he seemed vaguely satisfied with that, although I am not sure he liked the apple and he still tried to eat my sandwich!

Maybe if I only ate budgie food there wouldn't be a problem...pass the trill and babycorn!

Give us stuff.. or else

Or else what you may ask - well I didn't want to find out so I gave 'em stuff.

Monty wouldn't let me near his food in case I stole some, he said I eat more than the budgies and it wouldn't be fair on them if I shared. He has a point.

Sky did his Taxi Driver impression, it was very good.

The rest just scoffed food and sang all day long - it's what they do best.

Another thing they do very well is bite stuff - Snowy bites the sandpaper I put in their play-station, he has made it his goal to tear off as many small pieces daily that he can - I am worried what he is doing with them, perhaps building a raft or making a loofah so Monty can scratch him in the bath.

Blue-Boy also loves biting stuff, I keep having to shoo him away from the budgie screen as he's chipping away at the wood - maybe he's whittling it to make it pole-like, we'll have to see.

Masterchef for budgies, Monty preens his pretty show bird, Roswell and Jerry enjoy alfresco dining

Seriously, I spend more time in the morning deciding on the Budgies menu and making it interesting and pretty for them than I do making my own breakfast!

I wonder if when the budgies notice my efforts they come up with scores and criticism and relate this to eachother, in their best Greg Wallace and John Torode voices of course..

Monty "Top marks for effort but it just doesn't have the flavour we were expecting"

Roswell "For me there wasn't enough of it, if I wanted tiny portions I would have ordered a happy meal"

Jerry "It tastes okay but the presentation has let you down again"

Snowy "I was expecting big things but Delia Smith could come up with better with both hands tied behind her back and a blindfold on"

We went out earlier and when we got back home the budgies were all on the play centre together snoozing, this was a rare quiet, peaceful moment so I took a photo!

Also Snowy has taken to hanging upside down off of things, the wee beautiful boy is getting more daring and confident :)

Basil makes my birds nuts

I am sure that basil is like some sort of wonderdrug that makes budgies go crazy-insane. Monty is currently singing to his food (the aforementioned basil) dancing around like a loon, not sure what song he's singing but maybe it goes something like this:

"basil basil, you are so green and tasty and leafy and I want to bite bite bite you"

I am beginning to understand the inner workings of a budgies mind.

Will someone please tell Roswell that there are lots of interesting things to bite here such as cuttlefish, iodine blocks, branches etc and that he does not need to bite the budgie playground every few minutes - it's really noisy because the wood is quite hard and we're frightened it will hurt his poor beak.

Now all four budgies are making a swiss cheese style pattern in the remaining basil leaves and totally ignoring the fig that I had cunningly placed beside it in yet another failed attempt to get them to eat fruit..

Feathers everywhere! maybe Lady Gaga would like to make a dress from them

Still having Laptop issues, it's actually looking like I will have to buy a new hard disk drive as my second one has given up the ghost. We have spent days trying to get it to boot up any operating system but to no avail, as we're not Computer Experts and have surfed the net, got angry and tried all we can, alas it's a dead Laptop.

Back to the birdies, they have been quite quiet the last few days - the weather is turning colder and they're moulting again - lots of little fluffy soft white feathers constantly snowing down on us. It's amazing that the birds are not naked.

Monty has been very cheeky - flying out into the kitchen and jumping on my plate, tweeting and bashing at my cup, he's a very naughty budgie and it's so obvious that he's doing it for attention.

As I have not had my own Computer to sit at for a few days, the birds have been trying to get my attention even more than usual. I gave Monty some extra attention, even got him to fly to me a few times as I held out the stick :)

Then, he actually climbed on my arm - twice, it was a nice thing to happen in the middle of a very frustrating day, I really like it when the birds interact with me. When I sit at my husbands PC, which is next to the birds cage (on top of which is their play centre at the moment) they sit up there staring down at me, biffing the little lattice bell-ball and watching me type.

Anyway - here are some pics - including one of a really tiny Monty face-feather, I'm sure only true die-hard budgie loonies like myself will get why it's so tiny, cute and amazing!

Budgies LOVE corn on the cob

Yes they had fun today nibbling on their first ever corn on the cob..

lots of battles over it and of course Monty claimed it as his.

YUM YUM

Look at this, all that is left - not a kernel unnibbled..

Vegetable Kebabs and cheeky Vandals

At last I thought of an idea for all the lolly-sticks that I had been saving up.  Jerry keeps throwing perfectly good vegetable onto the floor before any of the other budgies have had a chance for a nibble of it.  So I thought I would use the sticks to make a kind of vegetable kebab.

I slit each Mange Tout and Baby Sweet corn and threaded them onto the stick, so far no vegetables have been flung over the side! So far so good!

Where is my piece of corn? I am sure I put it down somewhere

Monty had a good play this morning, running back and forth on the play centre and beating up the plastic budgie. I do wonder what goes through his mind when he does this.  He looks really furious.

Roswell and Jerry have been up to their usual tricks of climbing on things and biting them. In this case it was the turn of the Budgie Screen that we made for the Window.

A Protein Rich day

The birds are having their egg food today, they are all moulting and need extra protein for their new feathers to be formed and it helps this happen.  Besides, they do love it.

UPDATE: I realised that I neglected to mention that you should remove any uneaten egg food after 2 hours as it will spoil and go bad.  Also give the area it was in a bit of a clean too as budgies do tend to make a mess (or is that just mine?)

I feed this to them a couple of times a month for two days at a time.

A Previous Egg-fest

egg 11-5-10

Recipe

  • Boil an egg, when boiled simmer for 30 minutes to make sure any salmonella is killed – you do not want your birds getting ill with this, you might survive it, they may not.

  • Peel and grate the egg when cooled ( I usually cool it in water as I am impatient!)

  • Grate some of your birds favourite vegetables (always raw and fresh), I usually use carrot, broccoli and sweetcorn.

  • Divide mixture into two days portions, placing half of the servings in the fridge for tomorrow. It’s best to use it quickly, but it’ll stay fresh for up to two days in the fridge.

  • Serve, yum yum! :)

How do you fancy some breakfast with me?

Monty, Snowy, Roswell and Jerry are sharing my breakfast today.

We're having Red Pepper, Baby Corn, Mange Tout, Curly Parsley all mounted on a broccoli stalk.

Yum yum?

Bring your own fork, napkin and bib.

They do love their vegetables and they had better eat them like good little boys or I'll have to send them to their room :)

Broccoli and Weetabix for breakfast?

Most mornings by birds get a salad of grated vegetables on a pyrex plate on top of their cage. It's given to them before I even have my morning coffee.  I bet you're thinking "Spoilt little so and so's.."

But they really care about my health and well-being and today they proved it, they have thought about what I eat and have obviously decided I don't have enough green stuff in my diet.  I was sitting at my laptop eating my weetabix this morning and after being overflown by four screaming budgies having their morning rant and excitement hour, I looked down to find a tiny piece of Broccoli left as a nutritious gift in my breakfast.

It could have been far worse believe me..

Addicted to Corn

Snowy tells us of his massive maize addiction and how it almost ruined his life.  "In the beginning I was only trying to look a little bit more like Jerry, he's a very pretty yellowface budgie you see"

"It all got a bit out of beak and I couldn't stop myself from chomping on it when I should be doing other things.  My singing, squawking and crochet really suffered"

"I had to take Monty to one side and confide in him, he showed me how to take my mind off the corn by flying over my owner and letting a big Woopsie fall on her head. I'm much better now"

Trained by my budgies

Yesterday a HUGE crow landed on the balcony, scared Roswell and Jerry a bit.

King Monty bounded straight over to the window and onto the handle to watch and see if it came back, he wanted to take it on, even though it was 10 times his size.

I love my little attack budgie he can be so gentle when he takes millet from me and yet he's a vicious little bugger too, scared of no one or no thing, such a personality.

Please Miss can I have some more?

Roswell has decided he needs to let me know when to vacuum the seed husks off as I am apparently not doing it fast enough. He's started banging the seed trays by lifting them with his beak, I have to come over to make sure he doesn't tip them over and everytime I have checked they have needed vacuuming.

So I am being trained it seems.
